DDD Adelaide 2024: Sharing Insights, Sparking Connections

Last month, MaxMine had the privilege of being a sponsor at DDD Adelaide 2024, an inspiring event that brings together Adelaide’s thriving tech community to celebrate innovation, learning, and collaboration. This annual event is a cornerstone for technology enthusiasts, offering a platform to explore cutting-edge ideas and connect with industry peers.

We were proud to have three of our team members—Matt Magin, James Schulte, and Millie Russell—share their expertise in presentations that resonated deeply with the audience. Here’s a snapshot of the sessions our team delivered and the insights they brought to the stage.

Session 1: Let There Be Light – Two Journeys with Distributed Tracing

Presenter: Matt Magin
Debugging modern systems can often feel like navigating in the dark, but Matt’s session shed much-needed light on the transformative power of distributed tracing.

He compared the implementation of distributed tracing in two distinct environments: one leveraging a commercial solution and the other utilizing an open-source stack. By sharing the unique challenges and outcomes from each scenario, Matt provided attendees with a practical roadmap for improving system observability using OpenTelemetry. His clear, engaging delivery offered actionable insights for developers seeking to enhance clarity in their complex service architectures.

Session 2: Building a Modern Data-Heavy Platform on Kubernetes

Presenter: James Schulte
James took attendees behind the scenes of MaxMine’s recent platform overhaul, where Kubernetes played a starring role in building a scalable, efficient foundation for data-heavy operations.

From serving workloads to heavy data processing, James shared the challenges faced, the open-source tools that made it possible, and the successes that followed. This session provided an honest and valuable look into modern architecture design, leaving attendees with inspiration for tackling their own platform challenges.

Session 3: Syncing Clocks Without a DeLorean

Presenter: Millie Russell
Millie’s session took the audience on a fascinating journey through time—literally. In a world where time series data underpins critical systems, she tackled the intricacies of ensuring synchronized and accurate time sources.

Her talk explored how MaxMine ensures the data we analyze is perfectly aligned in time, presenting the right information in the right order. Delivered with energy and a touch of humor, Millie’s insights captivated the audience, leaving them with a newfound appreciation for the x-axis we so often take for granted.

Looking Ahead

At MaxMine, we believe in the power of sharing knowledge and DDD Adelaide provided the perfect opportunity to do just that. We were thrilled to see how well-received our sessions were and to connect with so many talented individuals who share our passion for technology.

To everyone who attended, presented, or helped organise the event—thank you for making it such a success. We’re excited to continue our participation in Adelaide’s incredible tech community.
