Project 1: Engine Performance Assessment Leveraging Big Data — Ryan Holder, Mechanical Engineering

What I did for this project

I developed a method of analysing the performance of haul trucks and packaged it into an actionable format that our clients could use.

The project aim was to help maintenance crews understand which haul trucks may have been underperforming and why. Truck performance was quantified by analysing power output at the wheels using a longitudinal force balance.

How it challenged me

The project provided challenges from both a technical and presentation perspective. Technically there were challenges involved in handling the large amounts of real-world data MaxMine produces and filtering for the most sensible results. There was then the challenge of displaying the information in a manner that can be interpreted quickly and easily by people on site.

What it’s like to work at MaxMine as a student?

MaxMine is a fantastic place to work as a student. There are lots of extremely experienced people who are more than happy to share their experience with you to help you get the most out of your time there. The office environment is very relaxed but there is always an expectation to work hard and effectively.

How it has helped me with my professional development

The project helped me better understand how to apply engineering concepts learned at Uni to real world examples and cemented the importance of presenting technical results in a manner that can be understood by people without an engineering degree.

Project 2: Learning Mining Haul Truck Suspension Characteristics through Dynamic Modelling and Optimisation — Gabriel D’Unienville, Mechanical Engineering & Computer Science

What I did for this project

This project develops a method of inferring the characteristics of mining haul truck suspension systems using a data-driven approach for the purpose of giving mine sites the ability to constantly monitor and proactively maintain their suspension systems.

The method is based on optimising the parameters of a dynamic model by comparing its output to high resolution strut pressure data. Model parameters are adjusted iteratively until a simulated strut pressure signal is able to closely match one that is measured. The suspension condition degradation can be monitored by observing how the model parameters change over time.

How it challenged me

The project challenged me to think outside the box on a very open-ended problem.

What it’s like to work at MaxMine as a student?

MaxMine is a great environment to work in as a student. The team has a very broad range of expertise, including mechanical engineering, statistics, software engineering, dev-ops, embedded computing, hardware design and much more. Everyone is very supportive and there is always someone around with experience who is happy to head over to a whiteboard and work through problems

How it has helped me with my professional development

Undertaking my honours project with MaxMine has given me valuable experience working with tough real-world problems. The opportunity to work with skilled engineers has smoothed my transition to a graduate position and enabled me to make immediate contributions to the team.

Project 3: Canary Hardware — Harrison Schuster, Mechanical Engineering & Computer Science

What I did for this project

Assisted in the creation of an internal testing station to verify safe deployment of firmware releases. Such a station helps reduce/nullify the risk of blocking/bricking client hardware, which would otherwise result in costly (time and money) repair exercises.

How it challenged me

Being briefed on the project to get up to others who have been working on it for some time, that was a challenge, however it was only short-lived. The main challenge was soaking in all of the new (and interesting) technical detail and applying it effectively and doing so was aided greatly by the well-versed team at MaxMine. With the Canary project being a brand new project, small technical challenges took longer than expected to solve, although they always ended up getting solved through some perseverance.

What it’s like to work at MaxMine as a student?

There was a balanced mixture of both hands-on work as well as engineering design. Working through problems was quite self-directed (in a good way), and any deep ruts were avoided by talking to the right person for quick advice. The culture was excellent (especially compared to stories of peers’ experiences at other workplaces); No drama, simply people taking pride in their work in a team environment. The start-up vibes are still resonating, making it a great place to be.

How it has helped me with my professional development

It puts the university coursework into context. Going through university it’s nice to think that all of the knowledge will be used, but this isn’t the case. University has instead seemingly set the foundation for how to learn quickly and apply effectively, and the environment at MaxMine facilitates this. Another big component is how it has aided in teamwork; The tools and workflows used have complemented the teamwork styles taught in later undergrad years.
